Working for a charity is not always thought to be the most glamorous of occupations, however on the 24th of September a little bit of sparkle was added to this sector by the Third Sector Excellence Awards. Fasken Martineau, our lawyer associates made it possible for us to attend after we had been shortlisted in two categories: Best Website and Social Enterprise.#
The Awards are to reward those in the third sector who have demonstrated examples of “outstanding campaigns, strategies, projects and performance, backed up by hard evidence of success”. As this is a sector full of many innovative and creative organisations Healthy Planet was delighted to have been nominated for two awards and was very excited for the event ahead.
On the day I was the lucky intern chosen to fill the space of a last minute drop out and was instantly excited to be invited to such a prestigious event. The challenge then was to try and find a suitable dress and make myself fit for the black tie dinner in time and after an extremely quick dash home I was on my way.
The event was held at Grosvenor House in Park Lane where on arrival I was greeted by two welcoming hostess’ ready to show me to my table. The Ballroom looked beautiful with chandeliers hanging from the ceiling and tables laid out below each adorned with white tablecloths and candelabras. I felt honoured to be surrounded by such inspiring people who work hard in this challenging and dynamic sector.
After dinner, Angela Smith, the Minister for the Third Sector spoke of how she considered the Third Sector in this country to be the best in the world, supported by reading a short message from Bill Clinton to the same effect. Angela Smith commended not just those in the room but those outside it for all the work that goes on.
Shapi Khorsandi was the host for the evening and despite now being a successful comedienne commented how she herself used to work in a charity call centre. After a short comedy interlude from our host the suspense begun as the winners were soon to be announced. In our category of Best Website we were up against Build Africa and the Queen’s Nursing Institute. After some nail biting suspense it was announced that we had been Highly Commended in this category, narrowly beaten by the winners, the Queen’s Nursing Institute.
The next category we had been shortlisted in was for Social Enterprise and the competition was fierce causing us to unfortunately lose out in this category, however we felt privileged to have been short listed and incredibly pleased with our commendation. After the awards had finished everyone was in high spirits and along with the winners everyone carried on celebrating late into the evening with a disco to round off the night.
